This has got to be one of the hardiest mammals in the UK. It’s also the only native member of their group, with rabbits and brown hares thought to have been introduced by the Normans and Romans respectively.

In fact, this is our only truly Arctic mammal restricted to high ground (usually above 300 - 400m).
