Farne Islands

This is one of my favourite places in England. Situated between 2 and 5 miles off the Northumberland coast, there are 28 islands in total, with only 15 visible at high tide.

Historically the Farne Islands were home to monks and saints, more recently the heroine Grace Darling spent her short life there. Now the islands are in the care of the National Trust. In the summer this nature reserve is home to over 100,000 pairs of breeding seabirds. When the birds leave in late summer, the islands become pupping grounds for the second largest colony of grey seals in England.
